Kensington Brewing Company


Located in the heart of Kensington Market in Toronto, Kensington Brewing Co. is an independent microbrewery focused on brewing high quality beer that reflects and riffs on the history of their diverse and eclectic neighbourhood. Their flagship store at 299 Augusta features an immersive design, with the goal of getting visitors as close to the brewing process as possible. A 30-seat bar features an ever-changing line up of seasonal and one-off beers, heavy on innovative and experimental styles.

Kensington Brewing Co. approached us to rebrand and position them as a fascinating and badass microcosm of diversity and acceptance as well as define a visual packaging system for their beer cans. The goal was to cater to younger beer drinkers and offer the idea that there's something new and enriching lurking in every corner of Kensington Market.

In our development of a visual system for their packaging design, we treated the boundaries of Kensington Market—Bathurst to Spadina, College to Dundas—as a kind of microscope, which conceptually allowed us to "zoom in" on locales of Kensington Market and define the types of imagery for our illustrations. In doing so, these artworks could then be layered under the logo and incorporated into the artwork, as if the contents of the lens is always changing and offering new perspectives.
